What Camera Should I Get for Video?

I currently have a Sony A7riii which I love for photography, especially as I sell prints of my work it’s been great.

But I’m starting to delve into videography a lot more and I’m not too impressed with the video aspects of this camera. It’s still good and I can still create some beautiful clips but I want to invest in another camera for video. I’m not looking to spend heaps though, maybe something under $2500 or $2000 would be preferable. And I would like it to be a Sony as I already have a few lenses with Sony and would like to interchange them with this new camera I want to get.

Does anyone have any recs on some good Sony cams for video?

Cheers!

  • What Camera Should I Get for Video?

    A video camera.

    What do I win ?

    • Sorry just kinda assumed people would know haha. It shoots 4k in 25fps but it crops every time I record. I think because it does this thing called ‘pixel binning’ as the a7riii has 42MP shooting which is quite high. And just in general I’ve heard the a7r series cams are just not the greatest for filming. (Doesn’t have 10bit recording and can’t go above 4K 25fps) plus a magnitude of other tiny details which don’t make it the best camera for videography.

  • The "S" series are the Sony video cameras, but won't get anything decent from Sony for under $2500 ;)

If it needs to be full frame, then the best bang for buck is the Panasonic S5 ii … but the 4k@60p crop is annoying :/

The only decent full frames without the 4k@60p crop is the A7Siii or Canon R6 II (but both are not in your price range)

My favourite for that price range is either a Panasonic GH6 or G9ii …

  • +1

A7s series or FX30 if you want a dedicated video camera.

besides frame rate limitations, like photos, a lot of the result is in the colour grade & post processing, shooting log etc.

  • Sony ZV-E10 which is expected to be updated shortly in time for the Paris Olympics. But maybe a bit cheap considering your budget? Full-frame ZV-E1 is a little over.

  • Smartphone? You'll always have it on you.

      Dumb people neg you.
In practise it has come down to footage between good SLR's, DJI's and Iphones from mod 13 onwards.
OP's budget does not allow him for pro stuff like Red or Arri.
There are also special fields like electronic new gathering where paparazzi dump Sony because it is too easy to be recognised.

  • If you don't care about lens compatibility the Panasonic G series is the go to for creators for its smaller size but still very very good image quality. Big sensors are less important for video unless you are shooting for Imax.

  • A7c ii, but it is $2650

  • Get a potato.
